Hello everybody and welcome to the Business Strategist with myself, Adam Strong, super pumped and super exciting. Hope you’re doing well at so great of you guys that are listening in either on the podcast, on your favorite podcast platform of course, or over on LinkedIn Live. So if you are listening to me on LinkedIn, please do me a favor, PLC post like a comment on the comment session.

on sessions below, that’d be awesome. And if you’re listening to this on the podcast, of course, you can reach out to me if you have any questions or queries, feel free to reach out to me. It’s hello at adamstrong.net. Anyway, what is today’s session all about? What is today’s purpose of today’s live session? So I wanted to kind of get some context about today’s session, but it’s about how to turn your competitors and turn them into your allies.

Okay, that is what the subject is today. And it’s really interesting, right? So I want to give you some, this is absolutely fascinating, right? I had a call this afternoon with a guy, with a chap who runs a online cyber security company, right? And his big concern was, he was so worried about what his competitors doing, and it was serving as a bit of a distraction, right?

And this was, and it’s really interesting when I said to him, I’m like, but this is what I wrote down before we even got started, I had no clue why we were on the, uh, I had no understanding of what his challenge was. And, and he was like, oh my God, that’s so weird. Anyway, so that’s what we’re going to be talking about today is how to turn your competitors into your allies. All right. And what I found in working with scaling businesses is that this is one of the big worries of what holds a scaling business backs. All right.

it’s because you’re so focused on the competitors and what they’re doing and not focused on what yourself is doing, okay? And so it serves this distraction of if you like, all right? Now we’re gonna talk a little bit about belief systems a little bit about today, but I’m gonna give you some, I’m gonna give you a framework about how you can turn your competitors into your allies. So if you are listening to me, do me a favor, PLC, post, like, or comment in the comment section below, say hi, of course.

Adam Strong (02:22.406)
and follow me over on the podcast, that’s over on Apple or on Spotify or any wonderful podcast platform. Anyway, let’s get into the gist of today, really looking for today. So let’s get into it, right? So the first thing that I want you to really think about when you’re thinking about your competitors, right? I don’t want you to see them from a threat perspective, okay? I actually want you to

I want you to think about how you can not treat them as competitors, but more as collaborators, all right? Now, I know for some of you, this might be difficult, okay? I’m gonna tell that whether you’re a consultant, whether you’re a lawyer or whatever it is, whatever profession you have, okay? I know this is difficult for some of you, okay? But I really want to challenge your belief systems right now, okay? I really want to challenge your belief systems.

So if you say in your mind, oh, my competitors are not open to this, my, you know. So if you believe in these things, if you believe in that, I want you to challenge that thought process, okay? Because normally the biggest thing that holds us back is our mind, okay? More than anything else, all right? So let me, what I was gonna say to you, let me give you some, let me give you a framework about today, all right? So first thing that I want you to think about,

when you’re approaching your competitors and thinking about how you could make it a win-win, I suppose, win-win scenario for both parties, I want you to think about before even approaching them, is I want you to use this first and foremost, is to think about why them, okay? Just why them as an individual or why them as a company, okay? Is it because they have access to the same market? Is it because…

you’re creating similar content? Is it because you have similarities in your brand identity? Is it that you are solving similar problems within your industry, okay? Or maybe that they have access to your market and they offer something slightly different, all right? And I really kind of want you to think about that, is to think about why then.

Adam Strong (04:48.97)
What is it that attracts them to you? Okay, what are the synergies? What are the, what is the energy? How is it exactly do you think from competition to collaboration, right? How, why them? Okay, thinking about that. So if you’re being approached by someone that’s potentially interested in working with you, right? What do you look for? Okay, what do you look for? What do you look for in terms of values? What do you look for in terms of characteristics?

What do you look for in terms of energy? Right, so I think this is extremely important. This is where a lot of people get collaboration wrong, okay? Because they don’t do the groundwork and they don’t do the foundational work before formulating good collaboration. Does that make sense? So I want you to really kind of think about why them. And isn’t just because you wanna get access to the market and sell to their audience, no.

Don’t think that because if you go in with that mindset, number one, they’ll pick it up straight away. They’ll know they can sniff a rat, okay? And normally, if I’m in a situation like that and I sniff a rat, I’ll be like, this isn’t gonna work. Straight away, I’ll be like straight up front, this isn’t gonna work, okay? So I really kind of want you to think, you know, a little bit differently, all right? So that’s the first part of the framework. Second thing is,

how can you learn from each other? Okay, so again, you know, when you’re sharing a call with your collaborators as such, your competitors if you wanna call them that, I want you to think about like how you can learn from each other, okay? What can you learn from each other? What can you learn about each other’s experiences? What can you learn from different people that you’ve worked with and it could be a different case studies. It might be that you’re

faced with a problem with a client that you’re working with and you’re just not sure which direction you should take them, all right? Or how you should advise them. Maybe your competitor or the person that you’re on a call with, maybe they can advise you because they’ve been in a similar situation. So thinking about that, the other great thing about learning from each other is how can you problem solve with each other, right? So there might be

Adam Strong (07:12.03)
as I kind of highlighted before, is that you may have someone that you’re working with. And you can apply this by the way, if you’re in any profession, whether you’re really an accountant, financial advisor, lawyer, whatever it might be, you’ve got your clients faced with a problem and you wanna help them, you wanna empower them, but you’ve got some gaps in your knowledge or your skillset, you know? How could you use that conversation with your competitor or collaborator? How could you use that to…

to add value to your clients and their clients. All right, it’s very important. Also the other thing, and this is really important, is to think about people’s strengths and weaknesses, right? So normally, generally, most of us, if we’re doing collaborations with our competitors, what you’ll find is you’ll find there are some crossover, but what you’ll also find is that the way that your competitors work,

are probably slightly differently, right? They have a slightly different skill set. They probably have a slightly different structure or a different process. What can you do to learn and refine and fine tune what you offer to how they do it? Does that make sense? And it’s not that you’re copying someone. What you’re doing is you’re gaining insight. And that’s what a leader does, all right? They try to learn from other leaders what works for them, okay?

And then the other thing is to think about, like I said, traits and characteristics, you know, in terms of like, you know, the way that you communicate to your clients or customers, you know, maybe there is a way in which to become much more clear in your messaging, for example, again, depend on what the context is and the circumstances, but what can you do to learn from your competitors? Okay. And it isn’t just about what they’re doing. Okay. It’s about.

how you can compliment each other. All right, so I really want you to think about that guys, really, really important, all right. Third part of the framework, and this is a really good thing actually, again, I kind of highlighted this, what can you offer to serve their clients? Okay, and how can you compliment that? All right, so as an example, right, if you have,

Adam Strong (09:34.058)
I don’t know, say you’re an accountant, use that as an example. Say you’re an accountant, okay? And you run an accountancy practice or so does your competitor, but you were thinking about creating an online course to empower small business owners to become more tax efficient or to become more compliant or to show people how they can save more money. You might be thinking about creating an online course. How could then you…

create a conversation where you can actually help your competitors, clients, customers, members, how they could help them. Could you set up a referral fee? Could you offer some sort of special offer or a trial basis for your competitors, right? So what can you do to compliment what your competitor offers, all right? So again, maybe you have something in the back of your mind,

looking at launching a podcast and you’d like to get some new ideas, right? It could be anything. It doesn’t necessarily have to be like in stone. Really, really important. So referral fees are a really a great idea, of course. And you want to make sure that you formulate that you want to make sure it’s a set up professionally. And there is an understanding between, you know, what is it that they’re putting out to their database and to their clients and

What is it that they’re gonna get back in return and vice versa. So there’s a provides a win-win situation. So that’s extremely important. So that is at point number three, a part of the framework, okay? Now just kind of wanted to check in with you guys, okay? If you are enjoying this, please do me a favor, PLC post like or comment in the comment section below, of course, that will be awesome. And if you believe that this particular episode is really gonna help someone,

share this video, share this podcast, all right? And hopefully it will give someone some breakthroughs. All right, very important. Okay, point number four. When you go in, say you’re having a Zoom session or a face-to-face with your competitor, the second thing is to think about is to think about how will the relationship work, all right? So there needs to be these clear expectations between

Adam Strong (12:00.95)
What is my role and what is your role? Okay, because if there is clear distinctions between how the relationship’s going to work, then it’s going to be far much easier in formulating and understanding how the working relationship’s gonna work. All right, very, very important. So how will the relationship work? And what is the expectation on their part and what is the expectation on your part? Right, and again, that is the…

equation or the secret formula to creating really strong, powerful collaborations. It’s only gonna work if you have that conversation with them. So that’s point number four. Point number five, and I kind of mentioned this already, which is accept expectations. So what would you accept and what would you not accept? So there might be, for example, you will accept

about the fact that, I don’t know, you need to put in 10% more work compared to your competitor, right? What you will not accept is they will not be held to account, for example, okay? So there has to be these boundaries put in place, okay? There has to be boundaries in place and there has to be these expectations of what you believe a good working collaboration is to you and what is them and link them together, right? So…

What are the things that you can work with and what are the things can you not work with? All right, that’s the only way that you can do it. Now, I know that I’ve kind of given you five pointers there by the way, ladies and gents. But the other thing that I kind of wrote down here on my piece of paper is a kind of a bonus as such is, how can you test something small that can test the relationship or the collaboration, right?

And we talked about referrals and cross pollination, things like that. But what if you was to create something together, right? Maybe it’d be a video course for your clients, maybe it’d be a podcast. What is gonna create, what is low risk, but potentially can create a high return or a high value to the clients that you’re actually serving, all right? So think about that, right? What can you do to create and test? And so,

Adam Strong (14:27.602)
One of the things that we do with our potential collaborators as such is that we work on a project and it generally is a small project to see how we both work, you know, how we’re both wired, how often we check in with each other, you know, who is responsible for what. It is basically the formulation of testing to see if it actually is gonna be working long-term. All right? So…

creating something small is low risk to you, low risk to them, but it also can create a lot of high returns for the clients that you’re actually serving in the first place. So I just want to kind of like point that out to you. I just feel like that would be, you know, that would be really, really cool and things like that. So just to summarize, and this is really important. Oh, actually last point, actually last, last point. And I should have actually said this at the beginning, but I’m gonna say it now.

your competitors will not, I repeat, they will not approach you. So the only way to make this work is for you to approach them. All right. OK, reach out to them. OK, you know, courtesy with respect, be polite, etc, etc. You know, using this formula that I’ve just given you. All right. OK. And just ask them if they’re open to a conversation, you know, because if you don’t ask, you don’t get right.

They will not come to you. They will not approach you. They may see you as a threat potentially, okay? But if you open the gate, then they may follow. Not everyone’s gonna follow, but they may follow, okay? You have to allow people, give them the opportunity, okay? But you must reach out first and take action. They’re not gonna come to you, all right? It’s very, very important. So put your ego to one side, ladies and gents, if that’s the thing that’s been holding you back.

and just think to yourself, okay, I’ve got to do the hard work first. I’ve got to reach out to them first, okay? Otherwise, it’s just not gonna work, all right? So in summary, and I just want to give you a quick summary before we finish today’s episode is, number one, when we’re thinking about turning our competitors into our allies, number one, we’ve got to think about, number one is why them? So I talked a little bit about

Adam Strong (16:51.542)
potentially being in the same market, same industry, how you complement each other, talked a little bit about solving similar problems, creating similar content, et cetera. But why them as an individual, right? Why them as a business, okay? There’s gotta be an underlying factor of why them and not somebody else. What is it about them that makes them so special, right? Thinking about that, okay? Really, really important. Second part, how can you learn from each other?

You know, looking at it from the angle of how you can learn from each other. How can you learn from each other’s experiences? How can you learn from each other’s strengths and weaknesses? How can you learn the way that you problem solve and brainstorm? Okay. How, how can you think about, you know, uh, what’s going to say to you deliverables and how you can thinking about like trials and what they’ve done and what you’ve done and how you could, you know, what you can, what can you learn from each other? Very important. Third part.

What can you offer to serve? What, what can you offer to serve clients that is complimentary? You know, is it an online program that you could do? Is it the fact that you’re launching something and you could offer some sort of referral fee? Okay. And this is where the power of affiliate marketing comes in beautifully. Okay. Um, licensing, for example, okay. There may be some competitors. I know there’s competitors in every industry, by the way. What can you do to, you know, what can you do?

They might be following you on LinkedIn or on social media and might be stalking you or whatever it is, because they like what you do, right? But how can you turn that into turning into something that you might be delivering? Okay. And now listen, there’s only so many hours in the day, right? Okay. Everyone has a capacity in your business, but how can you, how can you effectively make that capacity and make it much bigger? All right. And using, you know, potential collaborators can help you do that, facilitate that, right?

Fourth thing, how is the relationship gonna work? Very, very important setting, getting an understanding of how that’s gonna work in terms of the moving parts, all right? Fifth thing, expectations. What will you accept? What will you not accept? What are the boundaries that you’re gonna put in place? Okay, how was it gonna actually work? And a bonus part was, how can you create something small

Adam Strong (19:19.574)
that is low risk to you, but potentially a massive win to the people that you’re delivering it to in terms of the audience, if that makes sense, okay? And then my last part was, if you wanna create more collaborations and less competition, you have to reach out to those individuals. They will not come to you. They will not come begging for you, all right? But effectively, the strength of the leader is to actually take action first.

All right, reach out to those individuals or businesses first. Okay. Cause they’re not, they’re not going to see you as a threat otherwise. Right. So that is what I wanted to talk a little bit about today. I hope that this has kind of been giving you some ideas and epiphanies, um, with regards to, you know, just kind of looking at competition from a slightly different angle, rather than kind of making it serving you as a distraction.

Okay, because there’s a lot of noise out there, ladies and gents, okay? But focus on you, okay? Extremely important, very, very important. Now, listen, guys, I’m gonna come to an end now. If you have enjoyed my episode, if you’re listening to us over on social media, of course, use the hashtag live, use the hashtag replay. That would be awesome. PLC, post, like, or comment. And tag anyone or share this episode on your own feed, okay, if you feel like this is really gonna help someone that you know.

Okay, within your network, in your industry, et cetera. And I hope that you guys that have been listening in on the podcast, of course, I hope that this has given you some epiphanies, has given you some useful insights, of course. So I hope that is really gonna give you, hope that it’s given you a bit of a breakthrough. And again, I’m all about disrupting your thought process more than anything else, all right? So challenging those belief systems that you have that might hold you back in scaling your business. So…

Listen, this has been an absolute ball. Hope you’ve enjoyed today’s episode of course. If you do me a favor, if you have actually enjoyed today’s episode of course, what I’d like to do actually is we’re actually running something which is absolutely amazing. We’re gonna be opening our next cohort for our game changes in a circle business mastermind program where we’re gonna be offering. In fact, we’ve only got a couple of spaces left.

Adam Strong (21:47.094)
where we’re gonna be offering three spaces, no, sorry, five spaces, five spaces for free to come and trial out our mastermind, our business mastermind in person, okay? Now, if you’d like the opportunity to become part of that, if you’re looking for mentorship, if you’re looking for someone to scale your business, but you’ve been kind of, you know,

you’ve been hitting the ceiling and you’ve been doing the same thing for many, many years, and you just need someone to ruffle your thought patterns. Do you need you’re looking for some new ideas, some disruptions of new insights, then this could be the right thing. We can be launching over the next in the next couple of weeks, you can join our waitlist. So you can get early exclusive access to our mastermind program, of course. And if you would like to get access to that

for free as a trial, we’ll walk you through to the way it’s gonna work is that you fill in the waitlist, that’s step number one. Step number two, if you qualify, you will be contacted. Step number three, we’ll create a business strategy to help you scale your business and you will experience our mastermind program, of course. And if at the end of that trial, you decide it wasn’t for you, then guess what? You’ve got a plan for you, you can scale, you can go away and implement it or…

The alternative is we can help you implement it, all right? And we can cross that bridge and have that conversation as you would. So if you’re interested in learning about that, the show descript, if you’re interested in learning about, if you’re listening to me on LinkedIn, say I’m in on the comment section below, of course, but if you’re listening to this on the podcast, okay, the details are in the comments in the description notes below. Anyway, hope you’ve enjoyed today’s episode. Thank you so much for listening in.

and hopefully you’ll get some great epiphanies. Reach out to me. What I would recommend by the way, is to rewind this and re-listen to this because you always pick up some extra gold nuggets along the way. Anyway, wish you a great day. Take care, bye.

This week’s episode is with James Roberts who is a former Paralympic Athlete competing in rowing and wheelchair basketball.

James was born with a congenital disability called femoral dysplasia where he had no femur bone. Despite this, he participated in full able body sports before transitioning to the Paralympics where he was an elite competitor representing Great Britain in several World Championships and the Paralympics in 2008 (Beijing) and 2012 (London).

James struggled to come to terms with his disability as a teenager, whereby in the hot spring and summer months in high school, he wouldn’t wear shorts.

It wasn’t until it dawned on him that the only person this was affecting was himself, so something had to change.

But in all these circumstances, he found a way of overcoming these hurdles.

He believes it is this mindset that set me up to win in later life and go on to represent his country at four World Championships amongst others as well as two Paralympics.

James is now an entrepreneur and online fitness and nutrition coach.

In this show we cover:

The struggles of self imagery that James faced having a disability when growing up

How your limiting beliefs can affect your mindset and confidence

The importance of creating a support system

Athletes are masters of getting in the zone, what the zone means and how James practiced to get into the zone for success.

Why it’s important to celebrate wins

As I sit on the sofa at home, I use this time to reflect on what I have achieved and not achieved in the past year, areas of improvement and what I need to do to change for the year ahead of me. I’ve come to realise even with experience and success in business…
… you can still feel overwhelmed, frustrated, fearful, self-doubt and a lack of clarity. (Even though you know what must be done)

>> Important >>
As a former elite athlete that studied and trained with Olympic athletes, I thought that I was invincible until I realised that actually we all have limiting beliefs and sometimes we are just so incredibly hard on ourselves.

When I think of myself, I’m the biggest critic. I put all this pressure on myself of running a business (or three) balancing work and family life and setting myself high standards.

All this pressure can somewhat paralyse our thinking and reduce our peripheral awareness.

When I think of my position, I came to realise that there are many others that are actually in a similar position. We all get stuck and it doesn’t feel good.

So, the million dollar question is…

How will you ensure your business is more productive in 2020?

Here is my “15-step checklist”

1. Create a VISION

Your vision needs to start with what impact do you want to leave the world, in 100 years how will you be remembered and what legacy do you want to leave?

Yes these are all big questions, Don’t get overwhelmed!

If you have created a why, goals, dream or purpose in the past that you have not achieved, it’s likely that something didn’t feel right, you were disconnected and you were destined for something bigger than who you actually are.

We all have a purpose in life, use a quiet space or use meditation tools to help find some clarity allowing you to tap into what you really want. It will also help you eliminate distractions, ego and low self worth.

2. ACTION PLAN

One of the first things I teach my clients is creating a business blueprint! The blueprint needs to emulate according to your vision, this will help you become more focused. On one page, I start with my exit strategy (If you don’t want to exit that’s fine too, you may want to create a business where you have more of a behind the scenes role).

In 3-5 bullet points, I write out what I need in place to make my exit strategy happen this varies from business to business. Here are some ideas: What positions do you need to have filled? What new products/ services do you want to have developed, what systems do you need in place? What countries do you want to expand to? Try to be as specific as possible.

Next…

A 12 month plan
A 6 month plan
A 3 month plan
One month from today

You will want to update your one page blueprint every month as your business adapts and progresses.

3. Don’t be afraid to fail

I have seen a common attribute in most entrepreneurs that I believe is our downfall, failure. I never see failure as a bad thing, I see it as a blessing. Failure is a way that has not worked it doesn’t mean it will never work. Did Thomas Edison have that mindset when he created the lightbulb? No he just found 10,000 ways of how a lightbulb didn’t work. Does a baby give up that easily when they are learning to walk? No, they keep going until they figure it out.
Accept It’s ok to make mistakes.

Don’t think your going to fail after
– One speaking gig
– One webinar
– One high-ticketed offer
– One course launched
– One Facebook ad
– One event

Keep going

4. Plan the day before

This is a must do if you want to kickstart everyday with intention! Always plan you day the day before and split the day into thirty minute segments. This is one of the key skills you need to develop to become more self disciplined and focused.

5. Manage your energy

If you want productivity then you have to start managing your energy more efficiently. That means taking regular breaks every 2 hours, eating a healthy balanced diet and staying in good physical shape too.

I encourage my clients to set themselves a fitness goal for example one of my clients decided to pursue the challenge of running the great wall of China half marathon. It doesn’t have to be as extreme as that just something that will take you out of your comfort zone.

6. Speed is the new currency

I’ve come across many companies that have spent years plateauing, losing money and profits because they’re stuck. The story of Blockbuster Video failing in the face of innovation to Netflix is a common one. We see the same thing that happened to Toys-R-Us going into administration because they failed to identify the changing shopping habits of their customers, failed to embrace a digital platform, and failed to adapt to the new market.

Slow-moving firms have no future. The world is continuously evolving. Big players like Amazon, Apple, Whole foods and Nike are beginning to swallow up the markets. These companies are making customers’ experiences quicker, easier and more convenient. And because companies like Blockbuster Video and Toys-R-Us got complacent, they’re out of business.

“Success is all about Speed”

To me, success is all about speed. I actually don’t care about anything else. Speed, both in people skills and hard work, will crush anything. How quickly you implement certain ideas, adapt to the market and stay ahead of your competition will make all the difference in your business.
As a former elite athlete, speed was so important, especially when it came to making a decision on when we needed to step up a gear, when we were going to overcome the competition, when we’d win the race.

It’s the same thing in business – you have two choices: hustle hard or get crushed by the competition.

7. No such thing as perfectionism

Many business owners wait to make sure everything is perfect. It’s important to realise that perfectionism is BS and that you don’t have to get everything 100% right all the time. There will never be the perfect time, place, situation or circumstance just be happy with 80% and then move on.

“It’s not about perfection, but just getting things done really quickly”

8. Measure everything

As an athlete we measured everything, it was key to track our progress that ultimately gave us results.
If you want to improve you need to know where you were (past), where you are currently (present) and where you’re heading (future).

Do more of what works and stop what does not work.

As an example I use a system called ‘LAPS’ enabling me to measure my leads, appointments, presentations and sales.

9. Stop doing list

We all have an endless to do lists but one thing I teach my clients is to figure out their stop doing list. To do this you must….

Evaluate what business skills you have and rate yourself on key areas such as sales, marketing, pitching, networking, branding, finances and operations.
Delegate as much as you can enabling you to focus on the activities you enjoy and that you are good at.

I’m not particularly great with numbers therefore I delegate that activity out to my finance team. What activities/ tasks can you list that you need to stop doing and how much will it cost you to give that activity/ task to someone else?

10. Know your value!

When I sat down with one of my clients ‘Richard’ he was stuck, frustrated and struggling to manage his time efficiently, he was stressed out not able to see his family and working in a business that was essentially him! I found that was trying to do everything (he was the bottleneck).

Wether that be working on his website, scrolling through his social media feed, checking his email, or creating a logo. He was essentially doing tasks for little or no money. When he realised this, we used productivity hacks and a created a small team of contractors (these we sourced on places such as upwork.com, fiver.com or 99designs.com).
He discovered all these activities are transactional. Transactional tasks do not add revenue to your bottom line.

During the day, you need to focus on revenue generating activities that grow your business enabling you to delegate more tasks out.

11. Systemise everything!

One of the biggest things I have really been focused on this year is creating more of an online business. We live in a digital world and you can create so much more impact by reaching out to clients that you can help in other places in the world. To move to the next level and be successful you need to develop and create systems and processes that support a new way of life.

The purpose of any business is to have a commercial and profitable organisation that works without you. If your business depends on you or the knowledge is locked into your head begin to document everything and use the relevant systems to do the work.

12. Condition yourself

This is one of the key foundations you need to develop from the start. It doesn’t matter about a strategy or success formula without conditioning your mindset first, you will fail. For thirty minutes a day (ideally in the morning) read, watch or listen to positive material that will energise, encourage you and will help you overcome self doubt.

13. Surround yourself with the right people

Take yourself out of surroundings that make you feel like crap and plan time in places that uplift you! Spend less time with energy vampires and toxic people. These are the typical types of people that have limiting beliefs and want to put their s**t on you, or the ones that tell you your not good enough, or offer unsolicited advice on your expertise with what you do, or those that just whine and moan about life and really do nothing to changing their own.

Unfortunately, reality is they can be an employee, a friend/ family member or worst of all your spouse. Choose positive people that uplift you and think like you. Create your own circle of associations that have a growth mindset, those that share the same success principals and values as yours, empathy, integrity and kindness.

14. Believe in yourself

If you don’t belief in yourself there will be no shadow of doubt that you are going to struggle! One of my clients ‘James’ didn’t believe in himself this created self doubt and fear of rejection. He didn’t want to pick up the phone to follow up with clients after interacting with them. After revisiting his vision and understanding his clients pain points he became motivated and believed that he could really help his clients find a solution.

15. Get a coach or mentor

From a very young age I was exposed to coaching early on in my athletic career. Honestly, if I didn’t have a coach or mentor there is no way I wouldn’t of had the success I had if it wasn’t for him.

If you look at Olympic athletes, celebrities or successful entrepreneurs they have all had coaches and mentors.

For most of you coaches/ mentors can come from books, audios, you tube videos, Instagram stories or just following successful entrepreneurs. If you want a short cut to success then go and get a real coach or mentor, one that you invest time and money with.
They will save you the most valuable asset ‘TIME’ which is something you can never replace!
A great coach or mentor should encourage you, hold you accountable and be honest be with you!

When you work in the trenches its hard to get a bird eye viewpoint of what’s really holding you back and how to fix your bottlenecks. It is critical to get some advice and have someone to turn to that will help you get to the next level (a place where you may have never been before!) It can be lonely running a business (trust me I know I own three). Don’t assume you know everything, be coachable. I teach this when I work with my own clients.

If its good enough me it must be good enough for you too!

Conclusion

If you’ve read to the end, I’m sure there has been some points raised that have resonated with you.
I wanted to share some insights into my life, my business and what you can do in yours.

Business is not easy (don’t let anyone tell you otherwise) I’ve seen so many business owners and entrepreneurs fall down the rabbit hole and its tough to get out!

The key is to spend more time working on your business not just in your business, and you need to learn how to work smarter not harder.
.
The truth is… you can patch some things together from this article and try to achieve success but both you and I know that’s the slow way. If you to build a successful business that gives you what you want out of life get a successful “mentor” or “coach” that can make it easier for you giving you a competitive advantage.

How to Increase Speed in Your Business

I was recently asked to briefly consult and mastermind with the senior board members of a financial firm. They had enjoyed some growth over a number of years but were experiencing a plateau in that growth. The Board were bickering, causing conflict, and I was surprised to find that the values of these leaders were not aligned to each other and not aligned to the values of the company. The company was not clear about the direction they wanted to move in, the reasons why the company existed and the experience they wanted to give to clients.

With new competitors coming into the marketplace, this company had started to suffer. Their problem was that their politics had caused analysis by paralysis – giving competitors the advantage.

I’ve come across many companies that have spent years plateauing, losing money and profits because they’re stuck. The story of Blockbuster Video failing in the face of innovation to Netflix is a common one. We see the same thing happening with Toys-R-Us going into administration because they failed to identify the changing shopping habits of their customers, failed to embrace a digital platform, and failed to adapt to the new market.

Slow-moving firms have no future. The world is continuously evolving. Big players like Amazon, Apple, Whole foods and Nike are beginning to swallow up the markets. These companies are making customers’ experiences quicker, easier and more convenient. And because companies like Blockbuster Video and Toys-R-Us got complacent, they’re now struggling or out of business.

“Speed to me is the difference between winning and losing”

Speed is about who wins the gold medal, who gets to the finish line first and who wants to win more. I’m extremely competitive and I don’t like to lose.

For me, it’s about how we take every single minute and make it count. How is it that I can squeeze in more meetings, how is it that I can add more value to my clients, how can I get on to a call or respond to a certain email, how do I deliver more results for my clients? At the end of the day, I have the same 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as everybody else. I don’t have time for politics and bureaucracy.

It’s the little things that matter. On a daily basis, I’m debating on whether I should take a fifteen-minute train journey or have someone drive me for thirty minutes. Yes, it may take an extra fifteen minutes above ground and cost me more money, however I can use the extra minutes to work. 15minutes vs 30 minutes.

And believe me, I’m making decisions on a daily basis that could hurt the growth of my companies if I get it wrong and have a direct impact on the success of the business.

For me, speed really works in many different ways. Speed makes it possible for me to come up with new ideas, to implement those ideas, to be able to create new products and services for my clients so that they can get quicker results. One of my strengths as a results-orientated person is the fact that I can quickly unravel problems and challenges and come up with solutions and get people to implement those solutions as quickly as possible. It’s not about what costs money, it’s about what makes you money. I always ask myself what will it cost me if I don’t take quick and decisive action?

Speed creates momentum and builds confidence.

If you execute with hustle, then you’re going to be more confident moving forward because you don’t have time to think. Many business owners wait to make sure everything is perfect. It’s important to realise that perfectionism is BS and that you don’t have to get everything 100% right all the time. Its ok to make mistakes. I learned more from losing than I did from winning.

“It’s not about perfection, but just getting things done really quickly”

Speed crushes limitations and limiting beliefs.

It gets rid of ego, it gets rid of negativity and it really sets a standard in your culture.

As a leaders and role model, supporting a culture of speed is important because staff members seeing that you’re able to move fast, motivates them to also move fast.

Why is fear paralysing your business?

Over the past few weeks, I have come across more and more examples of how fear becomes the Ultimate culture killer!

I’m a big football fan, which has changed so much over the past 10 years with foreign investors taking over clubs and turning them into business enterprises. Football has become very much about the results both on and off the field leading to regular media reports of how teams and managers fear of getting the boot.

This week it was quoted in the Metro newspaper, the Chelsea team fears that their manager Antonio Conte is going to be sacked before the end of the season due to the mixed results from the start of the season. I don’t wish anyone to be sacked however I am fascinated of where this fear has come from? What the actual cause of this fear is? And the impact of fear on teams performance.

In football, a culture of blame is created if results aren’t going your way and normally fingers are pointing straight at the manager in charge. Sports teams are always under pressure to perform at their best and investors can be ruthless if a team is underperforming. If you’re a football player and you open the newspaper to a story, that is or is not true, what does that do to the mindset of the players, what happens to the team chemistry and how does it change the behaviors of players

Does fear exist in your organisation?

Most organisations have some kind of fear that holds back the full potential of the organisation. Fear is disruptive that can slow organisations down (analysis by paralysis), causes hesitation, unnecessary stress and anxiety and holds back employees from helping their organisations grow.

We recently took on a new client that needed our help. The CEO had this massive fear of failure engrained into his DNA. When we interviewed some of the staff and clients they were becoming uncomfortable that the leader of the organisation had this perception that he thought this fear of failure would actually become a reality. He wanted to grow and scale the business but he was holding the organisation back because of his fear. Before I planned out a growth strategy for his business, I knew I had to deal with these fears and find out where those fears came from. His fears came from a mixture of life experiences that he has now bought into his business.

We worked together by creating some new habits and routines that he could start straight away. By the end of the session he was excited about the future of his organisation and felt empowered to move forwards.

I know how you feel…

As an entrepreneur you have had times when your little voices and sub-conscious mind starts to talk negatively, It tells you, you are not smart enough, your not good enough, your not talented enough and your not worthy. You become frustrated and your vision becomes faded, you find it hard to breathe and become stressed and anxious.

As a former elite athlete, one of the things I learnt from a very young age is how to condition the mind, what does that exactly mean? The things we think, say or do turns into a habit. Athletes tirelessly train repeatedly to improve their performance and achieve success.

Is it easy to reprogram the mind, no of course not? Will it happen quickly? No, it requires you to repeatedly embed new scripts, mantras and healthy habits into your life like I have been doing for most of mine.

There are 5 affects of fear that Olympic athletes are faced with that can also ruin your business.

It forces you to play safe

It distorts your purpose

It limits you to scale your business and grow as a person

It creates an unhealthy force that impacts all areas of your life

You become ashamed asking for help

We will look at these in detail in part 2 of this blog.

In the meantime if you would like to know more about the Fears in your organisation contact me on hello@s969451691.websitehome.co.uk

Slow Decision Making Could be Killing Your Business!

I have meet many business owners, entrepreneurs and decision makers of big corporate companies over the years and I’m always interested in finding out how they grow their companies to see if I can use some of their strategies to grow my own. However what I have found from experience that people are very quick to talk about the challenges they face and what’s holding their company back, which is mainly because of slow decision making.

I have frequently experienced this problem in my work as a consultant. One of my consulting clients builds low energy efficient homes in Scandinavia. Their problem was they were just one person in the business, they had very unreliable builders which was making projects late, leading to unhappy customers and their slow decision making was leading to a stressed, exhausted and overwhelmed business owner.

As a results orientated business coach, I’m particularly selective when it comes to taking on new clients however the results within 4 months of coaching this client was that they increased their prices by 20%, they recruited 3 new people, they won contracts on bigger deals, they created a new company to build houseboats and they set up a separate building company.

Slow decision-making costs you time, money and impacts relationships, culture and psychological factors.

Slow decisions disrupt innovation and time it takes to implement new ideas. Your customers, clients and some of your team will get frustrated.

Stop being a perfectionist, as someone that trained and studied Olympic athletes we can analyses our performance, track our stats and measure our results however what is important is that we don’t get too wrapped in the numbers, probabilities and feeling bad about decisions that were made in the past.

You might recall the serious outcome for companies that have made slow decisions Here are three memorable examples: Blackberry was one of the leading cell phone manufacturers 10 years ago however they failed to innovate and adapt to the market. Their slow decision-making has led them to a massive fall in market share.

BHS was one of the UKs retail stores to collapse due to tough market conditions and failure to move with the times. Blockbuster the DVD and video retail chain failed to create online services until it collapsed having struggled to compete against online streaming services.

It’s important to understand that to speed up the decision- making process, you don’t need to gather all the research, stop waiting for the perfect time and go with your gut instinct.

Most decisions can be simple and others more complex which is why I use my skills as an athlete to help companies achieve a faster and more efficient way to achieve more clarity in the whole process.

Olympic athletes are particularly good at getting focused, I know from experience that Mo Farah eliminates his distractions and visualizes the end goal in his mind. Making faster decisions will help you achieve more focus and have the ability to let go.

Lessons from athletes on how to speed up decision making

They study their competitors for strengths and weaknesses

Have a strategy game plan, they know when to make the right move at the right time to win medals

Know the importance of deadlines

Accountability

Make fast decisions by counting down from five to one then deciding Yes or No

Question your decisions once you have decided what your decision is.

Learn from the mistakes of other athletes that are more successful than you preventing you from making them, same as with business decisions

By improving your decision making skills all of your team will develop an ownership mentality, this is one way to increase their personal development. Coaching and mentoring played an important role for Mo Farah’s success.

As an entrepreneur I always got advised to learn from your mistakes and don’t repeat them. My philosophy is learning from the mistakes of others that have had success that you seek and don’t repeat them. Gold-winning athletes are particularly great at taking full responsibility for their actions and it’s the same in business if you have clear objectives.

All of your team will be able to feel that they are contributing rather than being stuck.

Success loves speed
